What’s New: Play Therapy Documentation & Improved Location Management

By TherapyNotes, LLC on June 25, 2026

This release introduces enhancements designed to simplify practice administration and support specialized clinical workflows. From a new Play Therapy Progress Note template to a more streamlined experience for managing practice locations, these updates help reduce administrative effort while giving clinicians tools tailored to the way they work.

Here's what's new in TherapyNotes®.

New Play Therapy Progress Note Template

We've added a new Play Therapy Progress Note template to our Library to better support clinicians documenting child-centered and play-based therapy sessions in TherapyNotes. Built using a DAP (Data, Assessment, Plan) format, the template streamlines documentation while supporting the unique observational, developmental, and environmental elements often captured during play therapy sessions.

The new template includes:

  • Customizable Play Materials lists to reflect your practice's playroom setup and therapeutic tools.

  • Observational Theme checkboxes for quickly documenting common play themes, behaviors, and session patterns.

  • Flexible structured sections that can be added, modified, or removed to align with your preferred play therapy approach and documentation style.

Like our other pre-built progress note templates in the Library, the Play Therapy Progress Note template is available for practices to activate and customize from the Note Templates tab. Practice Administrators and Clinical Administrators can set the template to Active and begin using it immediately, or tailor it to their practice's needs using the Note Template Builder. If the template does not fit the practice's workflow, it can remain inactive and will not be available to clinicians.

Once active, clinicians can select the template from the template selector at the top of a progress note when documenting child-centered and play-based therapy sessions.

Designed specifically for child-centered and play-based therapy, this template helps clinicians capture key observations and therapeutic themes more efficiently while maintaining the flexibility needed to support individualized treatment approaches.

Practice Information and Locations Updates

We've refreshed the Practice Information and Locations settings page to make it easier to manage practice details and locations from a single, centralized page. Practices can now add and manage multiple locations without first enabling a separate multiple-location setting, simplifying both setup and ongoing updates.

Practice Administrators can designate a Primary Location, which populates the facility information used on billing forms and insurance claims. To help maintain accurate billing information, a Primary Location cannot be removed until another location has been selected as the primary location.

Additional improvements include:

  • Easier location reordering using drag-and-drop handles. The selected order is reflected in the Location dropdown when scheduling appointments, making frequently used locations easier to access.

  • Improved location editing with a cleaner view and edit experience, enhanced validation, and the ability to update multiple locations before saving.

  • Consolidated settings management by bringing practice and location information together on a single settings page, reducing the need to navigate between separate areas.

These updates make it easier to keep practice and location information organized, helping ensure accurate scheduling and billing across your practice.

The refreshed Practice Information and Locations page will be enabled for practices gradually over the next week. Keep an eye on your settings page to see when it becomes available for your practice.
